Bringing joy into your home can be quick and inexpensive.  With a little design therapy we can bring a little freshness and life into our homes.  Even here in sunny Orlando we need a pick-me up as winter drags on.  Here are some ideas that are easy to incorporate and help you to feel that extra special connection when you come home.

1. Orchids – these can be very inexpensive at your local Home Depot or grocery store and add a wonderful, elegant element to your home.  With proper care, they can last for months.

2. White candles – You can use all different types of candle holders but if you keep the candles all one color it is unifying and updating too.  IKEA has some great no-drip, long white tapers at of course at an affordable price.

3. Cloth napkins – Dinner just feels more special, even if it is take out and they are not as expensive as you might think.  I just spot treat them when I wash them and they come out great.  And if you are interested in going green this saves a lot of trees.

4.  Music – chances are you have plenty of it but don’t always put it on.  We set up a hook-up to our stereo in our home to plug in our I-phones and I am addicted to it!  Pull up Pandora or any downloaded tunes and you are ready to go.  Music sets the stage for you as you relax into your evening.

5. Fresh-cut flowers.  Local grocery stores and farmer’s markets make this such an affordable treat.  Seasonal flowers can set the mood for your home and bring a smile to you face.  Place a small bunch in the bathroom or on your nightstand to brighten your day.

6. Bring out your special china.  Stop saving it for Thanksgiving and pull it out of the buffet and use it!  If you picked it out because you loved it, then bring it out where you can enjoy it.  I have to confess that I have space limitations in my house but when we move to a bigger home, I am looking forward to purchasing more china sets and mixing and matching and having fun with my dinnerware.

7. Frame your event or travel pictures.  I am as guilty of this as the next person.  In this digital age we often don’t take that next step and print out that gorgeous photo from our trip.  You can only enjoy it so much on your laptop.  I promise I am going to print this photo, frame it and give it to my hubby for his office.

8.  New sheets (and pillows) – We sleep for a big percentage of our lifetime and we often neglect our bedding.  Good quality, high-thread count sheets are very reasonable these days and while you are at it, buy new pillows.  You should replace them every few years or so just for health reasons.  New sheets feel so wonderful when you are crawling into bed after a long day and it is a perfect way to treat yourself.

9.  Good coffee – Not really a design tip, but certainly makes you feel good to get up in the morning and enjoy the smell of quality coffee.  And even if it seems expensive to buy quality beans it is still cheaper than a daily latte fix!
10. Freshen your Entrance.  It is the first thing when you walk up to your home.  So buy a new door matt or a seasonal pot of flowers for you to enjoy when you get home.
So I hope you embrace your space and follow one or two of these quick tips bring a little joy into your home and your life.  Share pictures of your fixes or if you have other ideas to share with our readers please post on our facebook page or here on our blog.
